Home Learning Week 8 - Pizza, Alberta, Halloween

Reading

Oral reading, discussing, retelling
Junie B. is a little bit feisty, and a little bit funny at the same time.

Executive Functioning - Cooking

Planning, decision making, cutting, spreading, taking initiative
I literally just made a pizza on my own. That's impressive! Do you think I put a lot of effort in there?

Do you need a hug?

You think about it, Mom. Don't try that at home - seriously Mom - don't try that at home when you were a kid: cutting by yourself is not safe when you were a kid if your mom didn't teach you the safe way.

Colourful Pizza:
Lots of ingredients: peppers, cucumbers, pineapple, pepperoni, capers, olives, mozzarella, crust. And tomato sauce! Don't forget that, Mom!

Bake 10 minutes @ 450ºF

Let's eat!
Yeah, let's eat! Don't write that down. Erase "let's eat" - Princess Manners! (OK - you can leave that in.)

Math - Addition and Subtraction
Printing - 8

Adding, subtracting using Math Playground Number Bars (virtual cuisenaire rods) - homework, VLC
I am learning quickly! Make the 14. Get the 9. Put it on the top or the bottom? What toys did I have have when I was a baby? What do I do now? 14 minus 9 equals blank... 5!

Geography, Language Arts - Alberta

Researching, writing, recalling. Mind map from VLC.

Homework - watch a Youtube video about Alberta and find three facts:

  1. Alberta has buffalo. One buffalo, two buffalo. Don't put an "s".
  2. Alberta has pontoon planes for landing on water because there are lots of lakes. Pontoons are not wheels. They look like big water skis.
  3. Alberta's flower is wild rose. They are pink.
  4. Alberta's licence plate says, "Wild Rose Country". There is a picture of a wild rose on it.
  5. The BC licence plate has "Beautiful British Columbia" and a picture of the BC flag.

Recycling, Traditions, Communication, Art - Halloween

The interview was fine. You can hear it on Halloween day at about 12:30.

Here are some zero waste Halloween ideas:
A skeleton made of milk cartons. Somebody drank a lot of milk!

Cut out Mexican decorations - papel picado. That means punched paper. It is HARD!

Paper plates and garbage bags

It was basically a festival we went to. It's a pumpkin patch.

Pumpkins made of paper

Language Arts - Paragraphs, Topic Sentences

What has an ice-cream sandwich got to do with a paragraph?
All I want to do is finish this one, then that's it!

Math, Gardening, Science, Fine Motor - Graphing Slugs

Adding 1, graphing, counting by 5,
comparing, colouring inside the lines,
physical activity, Vitamin D!
We found 120 slugs! That's a lot of slugs! Look how huge this is!

I want to play with Math Playground now. It's math, but it's a playground. It has lots of stuff there. It's fun. Let's go now.

Bye.

Home Learning Week 7 - BC, +/- 1, Braces, Bees, Rain Water

Health

Today is a special day - I'm having a "Braces Off" celebration. I have my expander off, my braces off and I'm sleeping with my (scoliosis) brace off. That's pretty special.

With braces I couldn't eat oranges or peaches - they got stuck in there! You know what I mean, right? They are stringy. I couldn't eat caramel, gum or gumis, either, so today we did everything I wanted to do: one caramel, five gumis and I am chewing a whole package of gum. Juicy Fruit is very spicy when you put it under your top lip.

I want to blow bubbles - how about a new packet of gum another day?
I don't know if my old neighbours will notice my braces are off, and my expander... Obviously they will! I have nothing in my mouth except gum and teeth and mouth. My mouth has a lot of mouth in there! I look so different than before. I totally do, right Mom? It actually changed my whole face.
This is for making my retainer. It was pink and disgusting, then it turned dry in my mouth. I don't need anything in my mouth except my retainer; I'm a normal girl!

Science - Bugs

Beetle and bee - observing, researching, writing
A bee is very soft. The eyes feel like plastic. The stinger is on the abdomen, not the head. Bees are friendly when you don't touch them. Bees drink nectar and make honey. Do wasps drink nectar? Yes, they do, but they don't make honey.

Wasps are not soft.

A bee dies when it stings you; if you want another sting from a wasp, he'll bring you another sting! That's right!

Science, Gardening, Math - Slugs

Used calculator to find total slugs moved to date: 198

Slugs are girls and boys! They're both!

Math - Addition and Subtraction

Steady progress with addition and subtraction: she is now able to add one mentally and subtract one with a number line, at least 80% of the time, to 10 - and beyond!

Processing Speed

She writes down digital time,
then we count by 5 on the analog clock
This is code-breaking work for Andrew. I have to get a letter and write it in the square and it makes a word. I am fast.

"Jabbed" means poked.
"Wheezy" means can't breathe properly.

Gardening, Cooking, Science

Reverse engineering a recipe - still need mint
We went to the Soap Dispensary to buy clay and cocoa butter for our face masque. The Soap Dispensary smells good like Lush or Saje, but there are no labels - you can buy things there in bulk. You need to bring your own containers. That's good for the environment because we don't throw away packaging.

Science, Math - Rain Water Collection

Observing, measuring, graphing: 22 cm since October 8
Counting by 2, colouring inside the lines
We had a nasty rain storm Saturday. There's lots of rain. Holy crow!

Social Skills

Turn-taking, following directions, comparing, decision-making, counting
Uno is a fun game to play. It's not hard to learn.

Geography, Language Arts - British Columbia

Researching, writing - with Becky
Homework: Three Interesting Things about BC
  1. Dogwood is the flower of BC. Dogwood is a tree. It is pink or white.
  2. Kitsilano swimming pool is the longest in Canada. It's an outdoor pool by the ocean. I went there three times.
  3. Once Upon a Time is filmed in Steveston. That's a part of Richmond. I want to go there and see the clock tower. It's a clock and a tower! It's both! You can actually see Rumpelstiltskin's workshop there, too!

Recycling, Traditions, Communication, Art - Halloween: Wednesday Addams

Wednesdayold dress, stockings, poison bottle

I need to find black shoes. I am going to wear braids.

AZ on Talkin' Trash Radio show, October 31, noon - Zero Waste Halloween Ideas

This is a lot for me. I didn't expect myself going on the radio! I'm kind of excited about it.

Science - More Bugs!

Brown, six legs on abdomen, two long feelers on tiny head, small, speckly wings with stripes on the edges, small, brown eyes on the side of its head
Our new house has bugs we've never, ever seen in our whole life. We found this in our kitchen. We don't know what it is! It's a strange bug - there's nothing like it in my book! It looks creepy. It is trying to escape. It might be scared. Let's stick it outside right now.

It is not a scorpion because it doesn't have a tail like a scorpion, or pinchers.

We think it is a Helmeted Squash Bug. Helmeted Squash Bugs destroy squash plants and make a stink if you bother them. It's not dangerous, so we didn't have to worry about it. Good thing it didn't make a bad smell in our house!

Have a good day!

Home Learning Week 6 - Thanksgiving, Earthquake Kit, Soaring Eagle

Monday was no school - I went to John and Sharon's Thanksgiving. They are part of my mom's family - we go there every year: it's fun. We bring Chinese buns.

I like to play with Katie. There are lots of dogs there.
I volunteered sorting fabrics at OSF. OSF is a place that gets fabric from people who want to throw it away. This is old polyester. The red one is adorable. The Beatles wore clothes like this. The girls wanted to kiss them, right? Yes or no? Polyester makes you uncomfortable.
We are making an earthquake kit. We'll use it if it's an earthquake. We need to buy energy bars and water. The radio tells you the news in an emergency; it works by winding it.

I don't think earthquake drills are scary, but it freaks me out if it's a real earthquake.

We got a face mask because we want to see if we can make the same one.

Lush smells good.
We put lipstick on each other for fun. I like make-up. I want to be a make-up artist - any kind of make up I want to do on people, and hopefully they will like what I made for them... makeovers and scary kinds. I like all kinds of make-up!
Bananas come from Gautemala. It says it on the bag. I don't know where Guatemala is. Is it in Mexico?
We caught 8 cm of water in one day. That's a lot, but I don't think it's very interesting. I'm used to the rain.
Carlo came over. He's my friend. We played soccer and made a potion. He got stung by a bee. He was like, "HA!"
Today was my first day of Soaring EagleI had a good time. We went outside and did stuff. I runned out of the forest 'cause it was dangerous. There was a tree that crashed a car!

I had some licorice plant: it was disgusting. You can eat it - it's a fern. You don't eat the leaves, you eat the stem. You can swallow it if you want to - it's kind of bad.

None of my rain gear is waterproof. I was freezing cold. Feel my hand. Feel it! My feet were wet, but I was fine with my new boots; they had a good grip.

I always enjoy myself.

Home Learning Week 5 - Slugs, Radish, Mushrooms

Slugs are wrecking our garden. They eat the plants.
We want to get rid of the slugs, but we don't want to kill them. We are catching them and putting them on the median near our house.  We hope they don't come back. In two days we moved 106 slugs!
A raccoon is living in our tree.
When you're a gardener you see the beauty of plants and the way they grow and die.

The radish is doing well. I'm impressed how big it is. We emailed Grandpa for his mom's recipe for pickled radish.
I think it tastes good and bad at the same time. The vinegar tastes strong. (Add a little sugar?) Bad idea, Mom. Now it tastes like wine. I need vanilla milk; it is going to help. I'm serious. Don't put sugar in there again!
The dog game was awesome. You have to run away from the bulldog and collect bones.

We are doing science experiments and research: we are measuring rain water.

We found these mushrooms near our house. I'm not too sure if they are poisonous.

Our neighbours gave me the sunflower; we made a bird feeder with it. The birds haven't come yet. That's true.

The flower sucked up the orange food colouring. It looked like an alien invasion because it took over the flower!

Home schooling is funny and not funny at the same time. It is serious sometimes. I am speechless.
