Home Learning Week 29: Kitchen Scraps, Northwest Territories, Butterflies, Fort Langley, Bike Riding, Estimation, Helpful, Banana Orange Smoothie

April 17-21, 2017

Recycling/Gardening - Growing Food from Kitchen Scraps

Rooting vegetable scraps to plant in garden; cutting with a big knife (point on cutting board, press)
Seriously, Mom, that looks terrible.

Geography of Canada - Northwest Territories
VLC Homework: Flag; flag meaning;  Bird - Gyrfalcon; Plant - Mountain avens; Tree - Tamarack larch; license plate

Midnight sun is when the sun goes up and down but it doesn't really go down at midnight.

Polar night - cold, snowy, icy, dark all the time. I would not like that. I think it would mess me up. It's not funny.

There's polar bears that are in danger there.

Science - Painted Lady Butterflies Life Cycle

Observing butterfly life cycle
Are they going to be pets? No - we're going to let them free. Will we say to them we'll take good care of them? Are we going to have some butterflies? Soon, or not soon? How many butterflies are we going to get? Are there going to be boys, too? Are they going to be all different colours? If they're poisonous ones, then what? Then we'll use gloves if they're poisonous, right?

I'm excited to go there!
***
I thought some of them are dead, cause they're not moving. They look super strange.

I think it's ready to be petted. Oh my god, oh my god - he's trying to get out! Why's he trying to get out? Oh, now he's getting down - he's trying to get out. When it gets to tomorrow it will be full big, right?

This is what they are like right now:
Date: April 21
Age: 6 days
Stage: larva (caterpillar)
Colour: dark grey
Length: 13mm
Doing: climbing, wiggling, sitting in webbing

Field Trip - Fort Langley

Are you up to this? Maybe there is a ghost!
Learning about BC's fur-trading history
I'm excited to go here! I'm getting a little bit crazy right now - how about you? I'm so excited; it looks so cool! At first when you get here you say, "I'm not excited." And then when you get here you say, "So cool! I want to go inside there!"

Where did they go to the bathroom?

Math - Subtraction of Numbers Larger than 19, with Regrouping

Build the first number; build the second number from the first number, trading one column of ten for ten ones; the remainder is the answer
Done my homework, and I don't have to do VLC homework right now! Hedgehog, do you want a hug? Oh, Hedgehog! You tooted again!

Same as above. Writing answer in correct column: ones in ones column, tens in tens column
This went well. You're always so proud of me; it just makes me laugh sometimes.

Physical/Social Activity - Bike Riding

Pushing off from standing (with help), steering, pedalling, keeping wheel straight; breaking, putting foot down when stopping, increasing balance, confidence and enjoyment; increasing fitness level
Nobody should forget helmets - it looks silly, but it's actually safer. Smart people wear helmets.

Traditions/Writing - Good-Bye Card for Becky

Becky: I will definitely treasure this. Earplugs! That is so funny! I will definitely use these! I especially love the card.
Marking passages; expressing feelings; drawing, writing, tying a bow
What picture should I write? This is going to be kinda funny. I'll try not to make mistakes. "Sad dance" - that should cheer her up. Did I write "present" right? How many legs does a dog have? Should I write "Dalmation"? 'Cause she might not know it's a Dalmation. How do you spell "teacher"? Anything else?

We really know how to do a gift!

Free Time - Activity Book

Filling spare moments with fine motor and thinking challenges; reading and following directions; cross word puzzle: one letter per square; fine motor: colouring inside the lines
There's a lot of instructions to do in colour-by-number. It makes sense when you colour it.

Are you kidding?! It's asking me to do white! WHITE!! Oh my god, what's wrong with them?
***
Apparently white works on it. See? Weird. So weird.

Reading/Writing - Emails with Grandpa

Reading emails and photo captions; replying
Ha! That is the cutest dog I seed! Dogs make you walk when you go outside. Oh, come on - look at this picture - it's hilarious!

Social and Emotional Development - Appropriate Questions, Continued

Compiling list of potentially socially inappropriate questions; discussing in what circumstance each question might - or might not - be appropriate, and proposing alternative, acceptable questions or comments
Your shoes look tight for your feet.
You don't have any prize for me, do you?

That's kind of rude.

Canada Project - Finished!

Andrew: What an absolute celebration!
On the Wall of Fame
Turning lists of facts into paragraphs; compiling paragraphs, flags, photos from each province/territory into one huge poster
It almost felt like forever, didn't it? In a good way. Aw man - this really was worth it; this was worth it, wasn't it?
Showing pride in accomplishment
Faaabulous!

Listening Comprehension/Following Directions

Listening to and following directions, with one repetition permitted
I told you I was not pretty good at chickens! There are some snakes in the trees! A lot of snakes!

Everybody gets distracted - what's that sound?

Math - Intro to Estimation

Andrew: I've got to throw down this big, complex word today: tell me if you can read this...
AZ: Estimation. You never make it too hard for me.
Introduction to the concept of "estimation" - target: the red dot is the answer, the blue is pretty close, the white is not close at all; introduction to rounding down
Andrew: The red dot is the answer. If I shoot a bow and arrow, or a rifle and I hit the blue... it's not a bullseye (but)...  it's still pretty good - that's what an estimation is: a fancy word for an accurate, well-informed guess; having a good idea what the answer is going to be before you do the calculation. We do the estimation before we answer the question.

One of the first skills in estimation is called "rounding".

Social and Emotional Development - Helpful

Processing, recognizing, discussing and developing language for emotions; fine motor: colouring
I like to be helpful. I help people if they're having trouble with work - I helped a boy read because he had troubles. I cook dinner with Mom. I help Dad bake sometimes. It feels helpful - it's a good feeling.

Cooking: Made-Up Recipe - Banana and Orange Smoothie

Combining flavours/ingredients to make a new recipe; measuring, pouring
4 frozen bananas
1 orange, peeled
1 tsp flax seed
2 tbsp hemp hearts
1/2 cup mixed frozen fruit
3 cups milk

Blend and enjoy! It's basically what you have to say: blend and enjoy, right? It's excellent! If anyone wants to make this same smoothie, we'll say, "Go ahead!"

Home Learning Week 28: I Spy; Subtraction of Numbers Larger than 19, without and with Regrouping; Spelling "ee"; Frustrated; Ancient Greece; Nunavit; Quinoa Veggie Salad; Cat Whiskers; Dog Biscuit; Butterfly Cage; Baby Alive Food DIY

April 10-14, 2017

Visual Memory - I Spy Eagle Eye

Find an object in the game board that matches one on the card
Developing visual discrimination, observation and memorization
I did it once and I did not like it. This time I liked it because I did better than before.

Math - Subtraction of Numbers Greater than 19, without Regrouping

Andrew: What is the most important rule? Build the second number with blocks from the first number - that's the trick to getting subtraction. Start with the ones.
Using Cuisenaire rods to subtract numbers greater than 19, without regrouping; using calculator to check answers
I've got a feeling we're going to do some math.

Ladies and gentlemen: I'm going to be writing down "checked by calculator"!

Mental Math: +/- 1

Adding or subtracting one without using number line, manipulatives, etc - all in the head; paying attention to operations sign
Listen to the minus, listen to the plus - that's simple!

Spelling - "ee"

Becky: When two vowels go walking the first one does the talking - except in this case the two vowels are the same.
Figuring out the spelling pattern (ee); writing the spelling word, as dictated; giving an example sentence
Don't forget to keep your lunch box.
Bedtime is for sleep.

Social and Emotional Development - Frustrated

Processing, recognizing, discussing and developing language for emotions; fine motor: colouring
It feels red inside. Like doing homework - I just want to stop and play on my tablet. Go in a different room. I still feel frustrated - I don't want to explain it; it's terrible.

Stress Sponge Technique - relaxation exercise to get rid of frustration, or to get to sleep:
Becky: Tighten your muscles: start with your toes, then let them go. Now do the same thing with your legs: 1-2-3, let go. Hold your breath when you do it, and let go. Now your stomach muscles. Then we're going to do our arm muscles.

AZ: It's hard.

Becky: And then your whole body - and if you do it really hard your face turns red. Are you feeling relaxed now, AZ? Relaxed enough to do some writing?

AZ: Yeah, but I'm not done colouring.

Mind Map for Sentence Writing - Ancient Greece

The Usborne Internet-Linked Children's Encyclopedia
Using encyclopedia page to stimulate ideas for mind map; writing sentences
We are going to read this book? I like this book! I'm going to find something that looks nice for us to read.
Mind-mapping based on encyclopedia information
Hold on, get a big mind map and make a big bubble.

Writing sentences based on mind map information
Ancient Greece was a group of cities. (I know how to do an "s" - hold on!) The greatest city was Athens.

Canadian Geography - Nunavit

Look how much writing I had to do! There's enough writing already.

Cost of Drinking Water - Nunavit vs BC
Comparing cost of bottled drinking water in Nunavit and BC, using Cuisenaire rods
"Explore Canada's Arctic"? Canada doesn't have an Arctic! Antarctica has an Arctic!

Detour: Arctic vs Antarctica
Discussion: Arctic and Antarctic, polar bears and penguins; finding Canada, the Arctic, Antarctic on a globe
Maybe if we're really lucky we can look up Nunavit polar bear pictures, 'cause they're really cute-looking.

Occupational Therapy Assessment

Assessing fine and gross motor skills
It's hard for me to do a triangle. I'll try my best to do this one.

Two-year-olds can't do this.

Made-Up Recipe - Quinoa Veggie Salad

Choosing ingredients that go together; measuring, mixing, tasting, evaluating, adjusting flavours
Mm - so, so good. Mom, try some! Taste it! Oh my god - so, so good! Three thumbs up - that's how much I like it - my foot came up, too!

This does not look edible, but trust me: it is edible. Omnivores can eat it too!

Simmer 15 minutes:
1 cup quinoa
1cup pineapple juice
1 cup water
1tbsp turmeric

In a large bowl combine:
1/4 cup garlic chives, chopped
1 stick celery, chopped
3-4 mushrooms, halved then sliced
1/4 cup orange or red pepper, chopped
1/4 cup canned pineapple, chopped
3 strawberries, halved then sliced
1/3 long English cucumber, quartered lengthwise, seeds removed and sliced
1 tomato, diced
10-12 kalamata olives, halved

Whisk together:
1/4-1/2 cup juice from canned peaches
(Come on mustard, come on! That should be enough.)
1 squirt mustard
(Look at you - making your own recipe. That's going to be so flavourful! Look how flavourful that's going to be.)
1/2 tsp thyme
1 mashed, canned peach slice
1/2 cup feta, crumbled
2 tbsp lemon juice

Toss together and enjoy!

Best lunch I ever had! It's so good I want more - how about you, Mom?

Physical/Social Activity - Beach and Playground with Kate

Walking, playing, chatting, visiting, relaxing, having fun in the sand and on the playground, enjoying the outdoors
If you hold on with one hand you'll go flinging! Fast, OK? I like fast!

Internet Research/Science - Cat Whiskers

Why do cats have whiskers?
To make them look cute? No! It's not to make them look cute - it helps them feel what's around them. It shows when they're curious and they're allowed to be picked up when they're curious, 'cause they just want to explore around you.

Physical Education/Focus Break - Indoor Laps

Running laps to break up time spent sitting; elevating heart rate, moving the body, waking up, chasing, having fun!
The laps are to make me more awake - right? My heart is beating fast!

We have 10 fingers in total - did you know about that?

Social Interaction/Gift Giving - Dog Biscuits

Thinking of others, giving a little gift
Isolde is a chihuahua. You probably don't know them, but she is Cori and Kate and Ben and Davis's. These are treats that I gave to Isolde, from a pet equipment shop. It was pretty funny! That dog went crazy for those treats. It's so funny and tempting for the dog, right? That biscuit.

Butterflies/Recycling/Sewing - DIY Butterfly Cage

Using recycled materials (old curtains, elastic bands, hook, cardboard from cereal boxes); pinning; stitching with sewing machine and serger; correctly holding fabric while stitching; cutting thread with scissors
Next week we're going to get our butterfly larvae. And we are going to go and see those olden days stuff in Fort Langley. We're going to have baby butterflies.

Auditory Processing - Following Directions

Listening to and following multi-step directions
Improvement: October, 2016: Level 1 instructions (right), with many repetitions
April, 2017 - Level 2 instructions (left), often with no repeats
It's hard to remember because you bring me a lot of information!

Math: Subtraction of Numbers Larger than 19, with Regrouping

Andrew: The only thing you can do is your best.
AZ: Yeah, exactly.
Regrouping when subtracting numbers larger than 19
Andrew: Alright, AZ, so today's the big day. ... Here it is - this is it: I need every iota of attention focused on what's happening here. Stop thinking about Easter, ice cream, elephants... Clear your mind. This is like Jedi training.

Andrew: ...Simply replace this 10 with your stack of ones. If I need more ones than I have when I am subtracting I replace one 10 block with a column of ones. It's still 52 - I haven't changed the number. Now build the second number using the blocks from the first number. Start with the ones.

AZ: There!

Andrew: What's the answer?

AZ: 38?

Andrew: No, 38 is the second number. What's left over from the 52?

AZ: Don't know.

Andrew: You were concentrating so hard on building the second number, you forgot the answer is right here.

AZ: 14! Can I get a pencil and write the answer down before I forget?

Reading - Junie B., First Grader (at Last)

Reading for pleasure and to pass the time; giving opinion about story, character, illustration
This is so, so funny!

Recipe/Social Activity - Baby Alive Food DIY

Following recipe; measuring; TBSP vs TSP;  taking turns, agreeing on colour (defending opinion); sharing; problem-solving; cooperating
You mix; I'm going to count to 13. Look - look how awful it looks! Oh my god, Connie, this is so exciting!

***

You've got to admit - paper towels are not a good idea!

Wednesday 12 April 2017

Home Learning Week 27 - Cheer, Fish, Digit Sequences, Spelling "ea", Sad, Spring 2, Matching Pictures, Butterfly Books, Math Review, Private Questions 2

April 1-8

Physical Education - Cheer

Six 55 minute classes
"It is a FUN activity that combines all the athletic components of sport such as strength, power, flexibility, endurance, fitness and mental tenacity.  It also helps athletes increase their body awareness and self-esteem and develops leadership and communication skills.  Athletes in this sport work toward developing skills such as tumbling, jumping, stunting, performance skills, dance and team work." (Panther Cheer Website)
I'm excited to go to cheerleading 'cause I like those lifts. They're so fun! It was hard to do it 'cause there was girls standing on my leg, but I'm not kidding - those lifts are fun!

Science - Keeping a Fish

Choosing fish, measuring water, counting water conditioner drops, feeding, observing
We know how other animals do it, but how do fish do it, with all that water in there?

He really looks happy in the water - let me show you. Seriously, don't let it get out of the water. Some stupid fish jump out of the water - you know what I mean, right? If they're smart enough they will jump out of the bowl and whack the mirror.

"Not" List
Listing what not to do with a fish
I know - no lollipops! Don't kiss! Don't hug! Leave them in the water, and that's it!
Reading about betta care, following directions and them dying, anyway - two in two days! Burying/composting dead fish; discussion: what went wrong?
Everything comes and goes. Tuesday leaves; Sunday leaves - it's basically like that. People survive, people die.

Are we bad fish owners? We sure have bad, bad luck with fishes. How is that?

He smells like dead fish - seriously. Well, that's upsetting. What happened to Linus? RIP, right?

I just touched a dead fish so I may need to clean my hands. Always good to clean your hands when you touch something dead.

I think I'm going to cry right now - I feel like it.

Listening/Short-Term Memory Exercise - Digit Sequences

Simple and complex auditory processing: repeat string of numbers forward (in memory only) and backward (with plastic numbers in numerical order, picked out if needed, then read backwards)
October, 2016 - 2 numbers forward only; April, 2017
 - 4 numbers forward and 3 backward, with plastic numbers for help
Becky: 0-2-3
AZ: Do you know Hermione in Harry Potter?
Becky: Let's stay focused - we have only two more.

Spelling - "ea"

Writing spelling words dictated from a list, with context sentences; identifying the common feature (ea)
sea, tea, ear, dear, hear, near, year, beat, meat, seat, meal, real, lean, steam, East
Rule: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking'
I get the rhythm - it's "ea"!

Social and Emotional Development - Sad

Processing, recognizing, discussing and developing language for emotions; fine motor: colouring
When I used to get bullied I felt sad. When it happened I kind of felt happy, 'cause I knew Carlo would stand up for me and protect me.

I try to cheer my own self up - I do something to make myself laugh. I'm crazy that way. I think about animals doing weird stuff and try to laugh: dogs going on top of their head, or on their stomach. Hey friends, look over there!

Signs of Spring II - Magnolia, Cherry Blossom, Hyacinth

Observing, naming and smelling flowering trees and bulbs; enjoying nature; walking
Today I see beauty outside. Easter - you're showing us off! I think the rain actually stopped because we said that. I'm not wearing a coat and I didn't feel a drop.

Nap, Revisited/Vocabulary in Action

Identifying fabrics with nap; loathe vs love
I don't loathe this stuff - I LOVE this stuff! So nice - look at this pink. Is this all for a girl's bedroom? This is the kind of nap you're talking about.

Math - Subtraction of Numbers Larger than 19, without Regrouping

Using 10x10 grid and Cuisenaire rods to represent subtraction equation - 2 sheets:
1) Build the first number using Smartie Blocks.
2) Build the second using Smartie Blocks from the first number.
3) The Smartie Blocks left over give the answer.
Nothing but check marks - look at that.

Visual Memory Task - Matching Pictures

Give 5 seconds to study three picture cards on rack, then turn rack so cards are out of sight.
Reproduce string of cards from pile face-up on desk.
Look again at rack, compare. Using words only (no touching), describe what (if anything) needs to change. Hide rack again. Make changes. Compare.
I need to get rid of the sheep and get the horse and put the lion at the end and get rid of the monkey, and that's it.

Library Visit/Oral Reading/Science/Gardening - Various Books about Butterflies, Bees, Cats

Visiting library to search for books about bees and butterflies for upcoming garden project; asking librarian for help; choosing books; checking out books; reading about animals (bees, butterflies, cats) for information and pleasure; planning a garden to attract bees and butterflies
Why does a cat have whiskers? Ooo! That's a nice question!

I actually like dogs. I like the cuteness of them. 'Cause cats are a little bit stubborn to get in the bath. Some dogs like baths a lot.

Math Review - Mental Math: +/- 1, 10+, 10-Partners

Andrew: Mental math means you should be able to do these inside your head. Do you remember how to do those? Go ahead and use a number line for the first couple, if you need to.
Focus on paying attention to instructions/operation sign for each question
AZ: 5 - 1 = 4
I don't need to count!

Social and Emotional Development - Appropriate Questions, Continued

Compiling a list of potentially socially inappropriate personal questions and comments; discussion of appropriateness of questions/comments in various situations
This is some difficulties I have, right? Haha! I don't meant to say it, but it happens! I was so innocent when this all happens. It's true - I am innocent; I did not think!
