Home Learning Week 5 - Slugs, Radish, Mushrooms

Slugs are wrecking our garden. They eat the plants.
We want to get rid of the slugs, but we don't want to kill them. We are catching them and putting them on the median near our house.  We hope they don't come back. In two days we moved 106 slugs!
A raccoon is living in our tree.
When you're a gardener you see the beauty of plants and the way they grow and die.

The radish is doing well. I'm impressed how big it is. We emailed Grandpa for his mom's recipe for pickled radish.
I think it tastes good and bad at the same time. The vinegar tastes strong. (Add a little sugar?) Bad idea, Mom. Now it tastes like wine. I need vanilla milk; it is going to help. I'm serious. Don't put sugar in there again!
The dog game was awesome. You have to run away from the bulldog and collect bones.

We are doing science experiments and research: we are measuring rain water.

We found these mushrooms near our house. I'm not too sure if they are poisonous.

Our neighbours gave me the sunflower; we made a bird feeder with it. The birds haven't come yet. That's true.

The flower sucked up the orange food colouring. It looked like an alien invasion because it took over the flower!

Home schooling is funny and not funny at the same time. It is serious sometimes. I am speechless.

  1. Do the slugs come back? Maybe you have moved the same slug 106 times?! (Ha Ha) Can you tell them apart? Have any birds come to your feeder yet? I really enjoy reading about the things you learn every week.

  2. Love the graphing! Early mathematician : ) same question as Sheila re: the slugs - maybe you could create a small habitat for them in an aquarium, and then take it further afield, to a nearby park or something.
It might be fun to identify them too. I did a google search and if they look different, you might have some slugs who eat your plants, and some slugs who eat other slugs! You might want to leave the "Predator" slugs around :)

  3. Wow! Those are pretty mushrooms and what a gigantic sunflower! I also wonder if you've seen any birds? I researched a little bit and found out that slugs do not like crushed egg shells, some herbs and flowers, like, onions, chives, garlic, thyme, cilantro, Italian parsley, rosemary and fennel. oh and have you tried coffee grinds? Or a coffee spray.
