Home Learning Week 22 - Valentine's Day, Science World, New Brunswick

February 14-17, 2017

Baking, Art, Celebrations - Valentine's Day Sugar Cookies

Using a rolling pin, gentle handling of dough, estimating equal spacing, tinting icing, "painting" cookies, decorating with sprinkles, giving and enjoying!
Cookies, cookies.... Who's going to lick that? That's enough sprinkles on that!

Colour mixing: pink + blue = purple!
Cookers always have the apron on - when they're eating, too. Mm... that's really good - can I have some milk, please? Mmm! And what does this one taste like, right? Who wants to lick the spoon?

Geography, Language Arts - New Brunswick

VLC Homework: learning about Canada, Internet research, colouring, writing - flagpurple violetblack capped chickadeelicense plateinteresting facts  (If I yawn, it's probably something boring.)
Becky, please don't make something crazy like this! Whoever did this was crazy-person! This is going to be the worst colouring ever I had. Now I'm going to get super-confused, because I don't know what I'm colouring! They're nutty - whoever made this was very nutty people! Very complicated! Mom, do you think this is even more complicated than the Harry Potter one? I think the person knows how to draw a little bit too goodly. I'm really tired of colouring - I want to stop and rip this page!

Science - Field Trip to Science World

Exploring science exhibits, especially animals (live and stuffed) and a live science demonstration on sound
We got to touch a turtle at Science World. I wanted to touch the snakes. They don't let you pet the snakes because they have to stay for a few days in their pen after they get fed - they can't do anything because they might poop on you. Their poop stinked 'cause they just ate.

You know how interesting this is - snakes when they get bigger, they shed and it's cool, 'cause you can see what it's made... the designs on the back, the scales. I bet an alligator can attack and hurt the snake, or maybe the snake can attack an alligator!

Crazy enough, some people have allergies to pets.
The big tree was huge. It was high up - I didn't like it.

Math - Tens and Ones

It's good. In the middle. (Not easy or hard)

How many tens? Write it down. How many ones? Write it down. What number did you make? Let's check (with Cuisenaire rods): take the tens, take the ones. Count by tens. Count by ones. Is it the same number?
Colouring in "tens" and "ones" to represent a two-digit number
Hard and not hard.

Math - Addition and Subtraction

Addition and subtraction, mixed up with 10+, 10-, +/-1, using Cuisenaire rods
I feel awesome that I had no help - all by myself. Oh my god, nothing but check marks!

You must be kinda bored, getting all these right answers. We are definitely going to throw down some more challenging work, pretty soon. (Andrew, VLC teacher)

Writing - Note to a Neighbour

Composing a message, tracing; looking out for neighbours
I was worried the house was going to get crashed down because of the fire - if it happened - from their car.

Home Learning Week 21 - Emotions, Ordering Numbers, Beaty Biodiversity Museum, Soaring Eagles 4

February 6-11, 2017

Emotional and Social Development - Emotions

"The colouring book... [is] a way to encourage students to talk about their emotions.... It incorporates a colouring break into our classes, as well, which she likes! It is one of a few resources we have that helps children develop a language for their emotions, which can help with internal processing..., and also help them to recognize how others are feeling." (Becky, VLC teacher)
I'm gonna do a proud colour - is that appropriate? I feel so, so proud of myself. Mom, I feel so proud of my self! How proud of me are you? What number? Out of a thousand! How proud are you for yourself? I am so, so, so, so, so, so, so, so proud!

You know what I do feel like? Is that I really, really, really, really, really, really, really feel proud of myself.

Moo, moo, moo, moo. I'm being a cow right now! I don't know why - I feel like it!

Math - Ordering Numbers

Finding the number that comes before or after a two-digit number; counting, starting at various two-digit numbers; counting to 100; differentiating "before" from "after"
I don't know why I complained from that!

Math - Addition and Subtraction

Addition and subtraction, mixed up with 10+, 10-, +/-1, using Cuisenaire rods
Who do you think is going to be proud of me? Am I starting to do Big Girl math? How much?

Math - Tens

Recognizing "tens" in a two-digit number - the first number tells how many tens
 I get it.

Science - Animals - Field Trip to the Beaty Biodiversity Museum

Observing animal specimens, making comparisons, discussing adaptations, asking questions, touching feathers
There used to have a turtle you could pet. Where did he went?
I think there's a lost egg. I think some of them already hatched.
I'm really interested of what that feels. Their feathers change their feeling when they start to get aggressive - they bush up.
"You have talent and interest. Keep asking questions - your questions are great." (Shane, museum volunteer)
At the Beaty Biodiversity Museum we saw dead animals - in jars, too. We were able to touch dead animals, but they were soft: a dead bird, and a dead owl wing. Shane was kind. He was a person that let me pet the animals that were dead. Seeing the animals in jars and getting to touch them was fun. And I bought a lollipop that had ants in it. Yeah - I did eat the ants. It was very, very bad.

Soaring Eagle Nature School

Hiking, tracking, birding, identifying animals and plants, survival skills, physical activity, enjoying the fresh outdoors with other kids
I sure really want to get into the bath. There's probably forest all over my glasses.

We walked and walked and walked until we found a snack place, then we walked and found a place to eat lunch. But I didn't finish my tea.
Wet and dirty = fun + laundry
I want to be in a club that helps the Earth. What should we do - more things that help the Earth... 'Cause I really love the Earth. 'Cause think of it this way: the Earth takes care of us - especially the sun.

The Earth and the sun made a deal: to make all the vitamin C and all the vitamins we need - and that's the deal they made for us!

Really, the Earth is going to die if it doesn't get taken care of. The Earth has to be spic and span and clean. I mean, seriously - it's going to die if it doesn't survive!

Foundations Skills Assessment - Grade 4

I have not tested myself before - but I know myself is pretty smart. I can go on and on a long, long time.

Home Learning Weeks 19+20 - Nerd Outfit, Quebec, Birthday

January 23 - February 3, 2017

Second Semester Reflection, Continued

Something my child designed recently: a Nerd outfit - her perfect outfit. She described it while I sketched and asked questions, then she improved it and coloured it in. We may or may not make it together, but we've got our eyes open for the components.
Nerds stay up at night doing science. I do wanna be a nerd that's very smart. Mom - you heard me, right? No one's gonna stop me, 'cause I'll be rocking this!

Canadian Geography, Language Arts - Quebec

VLC Homework - learning about Canada, Internet research, writing, colouring: Quebec license plate

Math - Ordering Numbers

Using number chart 1-100 to find "before" and "after" a number between 1 and 80; using number line 1-23, to find missing numbers; counting backwards and forwards; reading directions
I get it - minus is backwards, plus is forwards.
Using 1-100 chart to fill in missing numbers; reading a number chart like a book: left to right, top to bottom; reading "backwards"

Addition Fun, Subtraction Fun

Using a number line and columns to add two numbers, 1-10, or subtract two numbers, 1-20
This is the exact same thing we're doing with "Math Blows My Mind"!

Addition:
6) 7 and 7. Add them together. Get a 10. A three? 14. Hold on, that's a weird-looking 4.

15) Mom - come here! What is Andrew doing to me? Seriously! What is he doing to me? 10 plus 10! Nice try, Andrew!

I doubt math can expire.

19) What the heck do I do here? I've got a three. What is he doing to me? Mom - help me here. Three. I don't know why I'm hiccuping right now, Mom.

Subtraction:
1) 10 plus 6. I can do this by myself! 16 - and it is! No - 10 minus 6... 4! You know math is not really fun, right?

Reading Comprehension, Writing

VLC Homework - reading for information; filling in the blanks, multiple choice questions, and sentence-writing

Oral Reading - Critter Club, Book 3 - Liz Learns a Lesson

Tricky Words: Mr, Mrs, digit, beamed, July; Punctuation: exclamation marks (excited or loud), periods (stop), comas (pause), quotation marks (someone is speaking)
"Ch 9 - Gotcha!" - Oooh! I think there's going to be a kidnapper!

Liz got an "A". She cried, "Wahoo!"  Oooh! Why not? It's the best thing you can do!

"Ch. 10 - The Best Day Ever" - What's the best day ever? Tell me, right?!

Celebrations - Birthday Plans

Birthday cake - deciding on flavour and decoration, reading recipe, measuring dry ingredients and butter, mixing, pouring, setting temperature and timer
Making goodie bags - sorting, deciding, counting, making list, shopping, dividing, labelling
Tell me, what's it like to be ten?
Well, it's fun.
Is it different than being nine?
Well, yes - because I have two digits and nine only has one digit; that's it.

Free Time - Activity Book, Colouring

It's just a normal kid with his own disease.

+5 medical appointments

Home Learning Weeks 18 - Thank You Cards, Math Without Help, Term Two Reflection

Writing - Thank You Card

Showing appreciation, writing message of thanks, decorating and illustrating, addressing an envelope, mailing letter
That looks like a B - oh no! I don't want her to get confused!

Agh - I don't like the smell of Sharpie! Is it toxic? Hopefully it is not, 'cause that would not be good. Toxic is bad, bad, bad for your nose. It is bad for everything. My spelling is improving, Mom; you know what I mean, right? I don't like the smell of Sharpie at all. You know what I mean?

Now I'm just gonna make a heart. I wanna make a blue heart, but I don't know how. I'm gonna try and make a heart. I'm gonna make an emoji. Will she know what this is? A coat you can use for a polar bear - if it is tame! She will not know what it is, but she will say, "Nice drawing." Right?

K - I'm done!

Science - Hummingbirds

Observing wildlife in the city; following directions, measuring, mixing, pouring

Hummingbird Nectar

1 cup sugar
4 cups boiled water

Mix together. Cool. Pour into hummingbird feeder.
I'm really thirsty. Did you know cold water is the best to drink? 'Cause it refreshes your mouth.

The pee is the boss of you when you have to go to the bathroom. You just have to sit and wait for it to come out.

Math - Addition and Subtraction

Addition and subtraction to 20: +1, -1, +10, 10-, using Cuisenaire rods (real or virtual),
"10 parters" or number line
1), 4) and 5) Hedgehog - look: I've got 12 there, I've got 12 there! 12! Is this all 12's, Andrew? Well, no.
6) 12 minus 7: now this is hard, but I'm going to do it. When I'm done this one, can I have a break? It seems like it's 5. Did I do something wrong? Let's count: 5!
9) 7 plus 1. 17? No, 8.
11) 8 plus 3: I don't get it... I don't know what to do. Red! 11: look, Mom!
13) 5 minus 5. I don't get this. Zero.

Physical Education - Running Laps, Energy Break

Sixteen laps, and then we'll do it (page 2, math). Open the door first, or you might bonk into your face. Let's do it, Mom! Come on!

Back to Math

4) 8 plus 8: that's hard. This is getting a bit tricky for me, but I can do it: 16.
5) 8 plus 1. Of course I know that, cause I'm 9, and I know it.
8) 15 minus 7. Oh god, how do I do it? 5 and a ten makes 15. Put 7 on the bottom and get another one. 8! I don't know what it is. 8 - yeah! Silly me. 8.

Art - Painting, and Writing - Thank You Card

Showing appreciation, writing message of thanks, keyboarding, softening paints with water, cleaning brush between colours
Thank you, Grandma, for finding my retainer case. Thank you for the presents for my birthday. I hope they're gonna turn out nicely and not break. I'm worried about that. I opened the books that you got me, but there are two other presents I hadn't opened. I'm excited for my birthday. I wish you can come here one day, Grandma. The end. Love you Grandma. Love you, too Grandpa. AZ

I'm gonna turn 10 - I'm not lying. I'm pretty lucky - I'm gonna get two digits. Am I still 9?

Oral Reading - Critter Club

Reading aloud - reading for understanding and pleasure, making predictions
Tricky words: field, Sullivan, St. Bernard, any, rained
That kind of sounds like mischief to me! It's totally a mystery: they're going to find the dog, but how are they going to find the dog?

I'm going to read that part all over again.

Term Two Reflection

1. One thing I did to help a person recently: I helped a person get to the hospital. She falled down on the sidewalk, in the snow, and she hit her leg and her head. We put two blankets on her and there was a dog and I got to pet the dog and help the dog get calm. The dog was still scared and I had to help the dog. We waited until the firetruck came, and then I went to my buddy, Owen's, house, and I saw my buddy Owen and I played with him with his dog.

It seemed really dangerous for the lady, so we decided to help her. It felt really, really, really, really something good for my body 'cause I didn't do that before, but I felt good that I helped that person get safe.

2. My favourite book to read: Junie B. Jones and also Critter Club, because it was my favourite books. They were nice. I liked the pictures, how it was made (how they drew the pictures). I like Junie B. because she is really feisty. I think all of them, when you are done those books, are going to be mysteries in there - they are all going to be Critter Club mysteries. I have four.

3. I am interested in learning science... science kits. I do science with Dad. There's all sorts of ones; trust me - none of them actually worked. I want colour-changing stuff and chemical reactions. I'm going to go and take a science class one day. (starting Jan 31, but now postponed to Spring)
