Divorce: a Waste Audit 1 - The New Owner Wants to See the Property



The emotional attachment to home and the life events - major and minor - that occur there over the sweep of time: marriages, babies, deaths, new jobs, celebrations, gardens, the beginnings and ends of relationships...

Significant rags, in chronological order:

Pink bath towel, 1994 - bought while still single
Red gingham serviette, 1996 - wedding favours home-made by us
Green tea towels, 1996 - wedding gift from his cousins
Blue hand towel (now purple), 1998 - new house, new paint, new Costco towels
Home made white flannel baby wipe, 2002 - ready for our son
Turquoise tea towel, 2006 - yard sale favourite
Black - his old gonch
Grey - holey sock

June 6, 2016 - Craigslist > Free Stuff


Bubbles found something good


18 Years of Stuff (Vancouver)
Toys, puzzles, games, easel, kitchen stuff, fix-it supplies, shelving, shoes and shoeshine stuff, Hello Kitty body pillow, shin pads, Christmas items, books (kids and grownups), trophies, tins, CDs, wheelbarrow wheel, mini tramp, art supplies, ukulele - all with a story; the next chapter could be yours. 
Alley of 3600 W.10th.

Stuff comes and stuff goes - please take it away and make it useful again.

Spent most of the day packing in the basement, late afternoon cycling and dipping my toes in at the beach, evening in the alley, chatting with the people who answered my ad.
Alley people are friendly people - this guy took the lava lamp
There's a lot of stuff out there. Most of it came from someone else; all of it is useful. I'm glad it's going where it's wanted. There will be more - lots more - before I leave here, 55 days from now. There will be more still when I unpack! 
I wonder what that alley will be like...

Pebbles found a new home nearby; I will, too!

Saturday, June 4, 2016 - Changes

Condiment of unknown origin and age
11:40 PM - Standing at the kitchen counter, swiping reheated dumplings through unknown sauce from an ancient bag in the crisper; eating with my fingers: ME!
Emptying hooks, walls and cupboards - my home, becoming a house
Outside, my special rocks, stepping stones, five hellebores and ten plants of my choosing have been removed from the garden; they will be orphans until I once again have a place of my own. Inside, boxes are being filled with happy, hopeful, useful things that helped make this house a home.
Gifts on my doorstep
I've been told I'm rigid, resistant to change, but this is not the case - just look at me eating without a fork! I am simply slow to change. But with each box packed my home gradually becomes just a house - and that is making it... slowly... easier to leave. 

Changes are coming - big and small - and I'm starting to feel excitement: it's up to me now, whatever I want to do - even drink my milk straight from the carton!

I still don't know where I'm going, but I've got seven more weeks to get there, and though I'm on my own, I don't have to do it alone. With the help of good people sending me best wishes, rental listings and boxes, it will all get sorted out. 

Dumplings finished, then pasta, an orange, some trail mix and milk (from a cup); packing boxes has left me famished. For the first time in ten months I am hungry - a very good sign.
